How to Play Indie Game Demos Safely

Demos are the best way to discover indie games before you buy. Here is where to find them, how to download them, and how to run them safely on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Why play indie game demos?

A demo is a free, playable slice of a game — usually 15 to 60 minutes — released by the developer to give you a real feel for the mechanics, art, and tone before you spend anything. For indies, demos are especially valuable: small teams ship them during events like Steam Next Fest, on itch.io jam pages, and through their own sites. Trying demos is also the easiest way to support indie developers — wishlists and feedback directly influence whether a project gets finished.

Where to find indie game demos

  • itch.io. The largest catalog of free and demo indie games. Filter by "Free" and "Demo", and sort by recent uploads or top of the week.
  • Steam Next Fest. A seasonal week-long event with hundreds of free demos. The Steam store also tags many releases with "Demo Available" year-round.
  • IndieDB and ModDB. Long-running archives of indie projects, including older demos that no longer have an active storefront page.
  • GameUnderground. Our curated library links to demos and freeware indie titles, with each download pointing back to the original developer.
  • Developer websites and Discord servers. The earliest builds usually live there before they hit any storefront.

How to download an indie demo safely

  1. Prefer the developer's official page. itch.io, Steam, GOG, and the studio's own site are the trustworthy sources. Avoid random "free download" aggregators.
  2. Check the file size and platform. Demos are usually 100 MB – 2 GB. A 20 KB "installer" for a 1 GB game is a red flag.
  3. Keep your OS and antivirus current. Windows Defender, macOS Gatekeeper, and ClamAV on Linux all scan downloads automatically.
  4. Scan unfamiliar archives. Drop the file into virustotal.com for a second opinion before extracting it.

Running demos on Windows, macOS, and Linux

Most indie demos ship as a ZIP archive. Extract it to a dedicated folder (not your Downloads folder) and run the executable inside.

  • Windows. If SmartScreen blocks an unsigned indie build, click More info → Run anyway only when you trust the source. Small developers rarely pay for code signing.
  • macOS. For unsigned .app bundles, right-click → Open the first time, or allow it from System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Linux. Make the binary executable with chmod +x, or use Lutris / Proton via Steam to run Windows demos.

What to do if a demo will not download

  • Try a mirror. Many indies upload to both itch.io and their own site.
  • Check region restrictions. Some older demos and jam builds are blocked outside certain regions, or rely on legacy servers that throttle non-local traffic.
  • Use a VPN you trust. A VPN keeps your connection private while you reach geo-locked itch.io pages, mirrors, and developer file hosts. (See sponsored note below.)

After the demo — supporting the developer

If you liked the demo, the most useful things you can do are wishlist the full game, leave a short comment on the demo page, and share it with someone who would enjoy it. Word of mouth is still how indies grow. When the full release lands, buying directly from the developer (itch.io, their own store) usually returns the highest cut to the team.
